Joyce Garbaciak who plays Bethe in the magical musical PIPPIN which runs October 16-November 2, now in the Sunset Spotlight.
- When did you first become involved at Sunset Playhouse and what areas have you been involved with here at the Playhouse?
I first visited Sunset about ten years ago to cheer on my daughter in a cabaret. When I saw Sunset was doing PIPPIN this season, I knew I had to try out as that has been a favorite show of mine.
- If you are working on a Sunset show right now, what is your role?
I play the sassy grandmother, Berthe, which pretty much tracks. I’m thrilled to be performing in PIPPIN.
- If an actor, what has been your favorite role to date and what is your dream role? If a Production Team member, which show have you most enjoyed working on? What show would you like to do in the future?
I’ve only been in a handful of shows my whole life. But my favorite was in high school, where I was cast as Sgt. Sarah Brown in GUYS AND DOLLS. It’s my favorite because that’s how I met my husband – as he was cast as Sky Masterson.
- What do you enjoy most about the Sunset?
I love the camaraderie and professionalism of everyone I’ve encountered. It’s a supportive environment – especially for relative acting newbies like me.
- When not at Sunset, how do you spend your time?
I recently retired from a 38-year career anchoring and reporting the news in Milwaukee. People may remember me from my time at WISN 12 and WITI. I still do special projects for WISN, which I love. I volunteer with several organizations. And my biggest, most fulfilling role is babysitting my granddaughter.
- What is your favorite color/food/movie/TV show/book/musical or play?
My favorite color is purple – a shout-out to my alma mater, Northwestern.
My taste in food is pretty basic – I once was told I have the palate of an 11-year-old! Therefore, you won’t be surprised to learn my favorite food is pizza.
A book I’ve enjoyed is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I appreciate authors who weave history with fiction in a creative fashion.
And my favorite musical – other than PIPPIN – is THE LAST FIVE YEARS. The music is compelling; the story is so moving; and it will always remind me of my daughter’s professional theater debut in Milwaukee at The Rep, as she starred in its production this past spring.
- What is your favorite quote?
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. -Eleanor Roosevelt
- Any other comments?
I hope you enjoy your experience at Sunset and that you continue to support the arts. It’s so important to see shows that provoke thought, evoke joy and create platforms for talent to shine.
