We are often asked for audition tips before and after Sunset auditions so here are some suggestions from our Furlan Directors and our Musical MainStage/SideNotes Producers.
SUNSET PLAYHOUSE
AUDITION GUIDELINES and RECOMMENDATIONS
BEFORE THE AUDITION
The first responsibility is to be prepared – physically, mentally, emotionally, and vocally.
Song choice is important. Be sure your material is appropriate for your voice, age, and range. Example: choosing “I’m Still Here” from FOLLIES isn’t suitable for teenagers. You should know what the song means. If you can’t really understand or relate to it, you can’t tell the story authentically. Excessive vocal gymnastics aren’t necessary. Directors can tell within four to eight bars if they think you’re right for the role. Too many riffs or runs or straying from the original won’t impress.
Your sheet music should be a clean copy with cuts, repeats, etc., clearly marked. Always have more than one song ready; the director/producer may need to hear more. Your book should include several different styles – ballad, up-tempo, comic. It never hurts to be over-prepared.
A one-page resume with a good-quality headshot is very helpful (if available).
PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE!
AT THE AUDITION
Arrive at least 20 minutes before the scheduled audition time to fill out necessary paperwork.
Be sure your audition form is legible. Attach your one-page resume and photo (If available)
Take a moment to respectfully go over your song with the accompanist, clarifying cuts and/or repeats.
You should know your material well enough to be off-book. Do not read the song from your phone! Don’t make excuses for your voice (if you’re ill you shouldn’t be here). Performance counts so it’s time to sell your song. Instead of being frozen in place, try moving a little, even a few steps can bring the song to life and show your personality.
Relax! Smile! We want you to succeed.
WARDROBE
Wardrobe matters—it’s your chance to make a great first impression. You don’t need anything fancy, just something that looks put-together and shows you care. For women: a casual dress or skirt with leggings/tights, or jeans/pants with a comfortable, stylish top. For men: jeans or nice pants with a button-down or a solid color tee work well. Think “nice daytime look”—something you’d wear to meet someone important but still feel like yourself.
AFTER THE AUDITION
Thank the directors/producers for the opportunity.
Remember that the nature of this business is rejection. Every “no” can be a step closer to the “yes.” You may not be right for this production, but keep trying. Sunset alum Anthony Crivello has said that even after he won his Tony Award© for KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN he had to go on 100 auditions before he landed another role.
If you’re not selected this time, that’s okay! Most likely there’s something better for you so keep working, striving, preparing. Be grateful for the experience. If working with a vocal coach, keep at it and if not, ask around to find a coach that could be a good fit for you, musically and financially.
