Kara Penrose who is the Fight Coordinator and Intimacy Director for our current production of UNNECESSARY FARCE, which runs January 15 – February 1, 2026, now in the Sunset Spotlight.
1. When did you first become involved at Sunset Playhouse and what areas have you been involved with here at the Playhouse?
I became involved at Sunset Playhouse around 2018. I served as an instructor for Sunset Playhouse’s School of the Arts for 5-6 years teaching and developing a variety of theatre classes. Additionally, I have worked as a fight director for a couple of different shows.
2. If you are working on a Sunset show right now, what is your role?
I am the fight director and intimacy director for Unnecessary Farce.
3. If an actor, what has been your favorite role to date and what is your dream role? If a Production Team member, which show have you most enjoyed working on? What show would you like to do in the future?
I have too many favorites, but one of the most unique experiences that mixed both acting and my stage combat experience is I was the stunt double for San Francisco Opera’s production of Dolores Claiborne. I was video recorded falling down some stairs to then show in the background during the performance on a large screen.
4. What do you enjoy most about the Sunset?
I enjoy how Sunset builds community. I especially got to experience that a lot when working in the education department and seeing the kids build friendships over the years.
5. When not at Sunset, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy playing video games, doing jigsaw puzzles, hanging out with my pets and watching tv with my husband.
6. What is your favorite color/food/movie/TV show/book/musical or play?
My favorite color is pink. My favorite TV show is Severance. My favorite musical is The Scarlet Pimpernel
