MARTIN YATES – NEWSIES

Sunset could not be more thrilled to point the spotlight on a new volunteer!

Martin Yates

How did you first start volunteering at Sunset?

Looking for an opportunity to return to my theater roots, I reached out to Sunset with a short history of my theater experience and Brooke responded by asking me to sign up on Sunset’s volunteer portal. My first assignment was the Light Hang for BAREFOOT IN THE PARK. I enjoyed it so much I stayed on to operate the lights and sound for the entire run of the show!

Do you have a funny Sunset story?

Being born and raised in New Zealand and having lived in England for 12 years before I moved the United States, I thought I could do a pretty good English accent. So, I auditioned for the next show AN INSPECTOR CALLS. Thankfully, the director (Carol Dolphin) thought so too and cast me as Mr. Birling! The return to my theater roots was complete.

When you’re not at Sunset, what do you like to do?

I am an avid golfer and poker player who also enjoys travelling; especially back to New Zealand and Australia to visit family and friends.

What’s your favorite part about theater?

Working with likeminded people who love theater as much as I do. There is nothing more satisfying than when a show comes together to become greater than the sum of its parts (pun intended) and knowing your contribution (no matter how small) helped it get there.

THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF SUNSET PLAYHOUSE AND OUR PATRONS!
