Michael Pocaro- Sleuth

How did you first start volunteering at Sunset?

I was cast as Teddy in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE with Danny Esposito directing, and began begging for a directing opportunity. What began with directing THE MOUSETRAP somehow turned into more than twenty productions as a director, actor, and occasional troublemaker. Especially with the addition of the Studio Theater productions, beginning with my Poe series, PHANTASIES SUCH AS THESE, somewhere along the way, Sunset became a second home.

Do you have a funny Sunset Story?

I was seeking some Church Ladies for THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER, when a ravishing Sandra arrived at auditions dressed as a peasant for her role in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. I was thrilled to cast her in that show (and a few others). A few years later, I married her. Most directors are happy if casting solves their production problems. Mine solved my bachelorhood.

When you’re not at Sunset, what do you like to do?

I have a lot of interests! But when I’m away from the theater, I enjoy traveling with my wife, dining out, hitting the beach and bike riding! I have a renewed interest in visual arts and sound mixing, too!

What’s your favorite part about theater?

The people. A script is just words on paper until a group of talented, passionate, and wonderfully quirky individuals bring it to life. I’ve been fortunate to work with hundreds of remarkable people at Sunset over the years, and every production reminds me why I keep coming back. I hope I always project my sincere appreciation to all involved. In my mind, the theatre experience begins in the parking lot! All the people you meet on the way in, help to create the magic we work so hard to create!
