The Many Ways to Be Part of Theater—Without Being on Stage

When people think of theater, they often picture actors under the spotlight, delivering unforgettable performances. But behind every standing ovation is an incredible team of people whose creativity, craftsmanship, and dedication bring each production to life.

At Sunset Playhouse, there are countless ways to be part of the magic—whether you love building, designing, organizing, creating, or simply supporting the arts. You don’t have to step on stage to make a lasting impact.

Audition and Perform

If you’ve always dreamed of performing, we’d love to see you at an audition! Sunset Playhouse produces engaging productions throughout the year for performers of all experience levels. Whether you’re a seasoned actor or trying theater for the first time, auditions are a welcoming opportunity to grow your skills, meet new people, and become part of our theater family.

Build the World on Stage

Every production begins long before opening night. Our talented set construction and painting volunteers transform empty stages into believable worlds that transport audiences to another time and place.

Whether you’re experienced with tools or simply enjoy working with your hands, helping build and paint sets is a rewarding way to contribute behind the scenes.

Create the Perfect Look

Costumes help define each character and bring stories to life. Volunteers assist with costume construction, alterations, organization, dressing actors backstage, and quick costume changes during performances.

If you enjoy sewing, fashion, crafting, or design, this is a wonderful way to combine your talents with theater.

Design the Details with Props

Every object on stage tells part of the story.

Prop designers and crew members locate, build, organize, and maintain the items actors use during each performance. From period furniture to magical objects, props help create believable worlds that audiences love.

Illuminate the Story

Lighting does far more than help audiences see the actors—it creates mood, guides attention, and enhances every emotional moment.

Light board operators work closely with the production team to execute lighting cues that help tell each story beautifully. It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in technical theater or live event production.

Make Every Sound Count

Music, sound effects, and microphones all help create an immersive theatrical experience.

Technical volunteers interested in audio production can assist with sound equipment and operation, ensuring every performance is heard clearly from the first line to the final bow.

Keep Productions Running Smoothly

Stage managers are often called the “heart” of a production—and for good reason.

They coordinate rehearsals, communicate with cast and crew, organize schedules, call technical cues, and keep every performance running safely and efficiently. Assistant stage managers provide invaluable support backstage throughout the rehearsal and performance process.

If you’re organized, calm under pressure, and enjoy bringing people together, stage management could be the perfect fit.

Be Part of the Backstage Team

During performances, run crew and backstage volunteers keep everything moving seamlessly.

They move scenery, manage props, assist actors with costume changes, and solve problems behind the curtain—often without the audience ever knowing they were there.

Their work is essential to every successful production.

Welcome Our Audiences

The theater experience begins the moment guests walk through the doors.

Front of House and usher volunteers greet patrons, help guests find their seats, answer questions, distribute programs, and create a welcoming environment for everyone attending a performance.

It’s one of the best ways to support live theater while meeting fellow theater lovers.

Support Behind the Scenes

Not every role happens in the theater itself.

Administrative volunteers help with mailings, office projects, special events, fundraising initiatives, and day-to-day operations that keep Sunset Playhouse running throughout the year.

These volunteers help ensure our productions, educational programs, and community events continue to thrive.

Find Your Place at Sunset Playhouse

Theater is built on collaboration. Every actor, carpenter, usher, costume designer, stage manager, volunteer, and technician contributes something unique that makes each production possible.

Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill, meet creative people, give back to the community, or simply be part of something meaningful, there’s a place for you at Sunset Playhouse.

You don’t have to stand in the spotlight to make a difference. Some of the most important stories happen behind the scenes—and we’d love for you to be part of them.
